Pancreatic surgery outcomes- multicentre prospective snapshot study in 67 countries

Pancreatic surgery remains associated with high morbidity rates. Although postoperative mortality appears to have improved with specialization, the outcomes reported in the literature reflect the activity of highly specialized centres. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes following pancreatic surgery worldwide. This was an international, prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional snapshot study of consecutive patients undergoing pancreatic operations worldwide in a 3-month interval in 2021.

High prevalence of subclinical energy availability and poor diet quality among paralympic basketball athletes

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pre-season nutritional status, diet quality, and energy avail- ability levels of Paralympic athletes competing in wheelchair basketball. Thirty-two male paralympic athletes, aged 18–63 years, from the Turkish Wheelchair Basketball League participated in the study. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), while rest- ing metabolic rate (RMR) was measured through indirect calorimetry. Seven-day dietary intake and physical activity records were also collected. Diet quality was analyzed using the Healthy Eating Index- 2020 (HEI- 2020), and energy availability levels were calculated based on the collected data.

Can mindful eating be a psycho-marker of obesity in bipolar disorder?

A comprehensive education program on mindful eating and healthy eating would be helpful in elucidating the mechanisms of the possible relationships between bipolar disorder-specific risk factors and mindful eating. Obesity is a very important problem in individuals with bipolar disorder. The study was aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity in individuals with bipolar disorder and to evaluate the effects of factors affecting eating behavior such as mindful eating, impulsivity and eating disorders on the development of obesity in these individuals.

Biological clock and circadian rhythm of breast milk composition

The World Health Organization and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Found (UNICEF) state that exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life is an important strategy for reducing mortality and morbidity in infants. The circadian rhythm formation, which starts in the mother’s womb, continues after the baby is born. Breast milk plays an active role in regulating the baby’s circadian rhythm through the hormones, basic immune factors and bioactive components it contains, as well as meeting almost all nutritional elements for babies.

Malnutrition via GLIM criteria in general surgery patients

It was found that approximately half of the elective surgery patients were under risk of malnutrition according to NRS2002, malnourished according to GLIM. As expected, there was a high agreement between NRS2002 and GLIM (99%). According to all malnutrition tests, the presence of malnutrition or malnutrition risk significantly increased LoS. After adjusting for socio-demographic variables, presence of chronic disease, and the surgical site, the presence of malnutrition significantly increased the long (>7 days) LoS.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with situs inversus totalis

We presented a 35-year-old man with unknown situs inversus totalis who was admitted with epigastric pain and digestive problems. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen confirmed the diagnosis of a gallstone. Besides, the liver and gallbladder were on the left side and the spleen was on the right. All systems were left-right reversal as mirror image in all diagnostic studies. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was safely performed, despite of difficulties of situs inversus.
