Last Update: May 2025
At Weller & Co., safeguarding your personal, financial, and health-related data is a core commitment.
As digital threats evolve, so does our responsibility to inform and protect.
This guide outlines key risks and the practical steps you can take to defend against fraud and cybercrime.
Cybercriminals target individuals and organizations through a wide range of tactics.
Be aware of these common threats:
• Phishing & Spoofing — Deceptive emails, texts, and websites impersonate trusted companies to trick users into sharing personal data or clicking malicious links
• Malware & Ransomware — Infected links or attachments install harmful software that can access, lock, or destroy your data
• Ransomware — Often demands payment for file recovery
• Credential Attacks — Using the same login credentials across platforms makes you vulnerable to credential stuffing, where one data breach leads to many
• Social Media Impersonation — Fake or hijacked profiles impersonate people or companies to spread misinformation or gain unauthorized access
Take the following steps to strengthen your digital defenses:
• Think Before You Click Verify unexpected requests and avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, when in doubt, confirm through another channel
• Use Strong, Unique Passwords — Use a trusted password manager (e.g., 1Password, Dashlane) to maintain secure logins, never reuse passwords
• Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) — Add an extra layer of security to all your accounts, especially email, cloud storage, and banking
• Manage Your Online Footprint — Delete unused accounts, restrict personal information, and audit your public presence regularly
• Encrypt and Back Up Data — Keep sensitive data encrypted and backed up—ideally in multiple secure locations
• Keep Software Updated — Apply software updates as soon as available to close security gaps
• Secure Your Network — Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi and secure your home router, consider a guest network for visitors
• Freeze Your Credit (U.S.) — Contact major bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) to freeze your credit, consider identity protection services
Investment Scams
Beware of unsolicited offers promising high returns. Fraudsters may impersonate legitimate firms using fake documents or emails.
Red flags include:
• Communication from unfamiliar or unofficial domains
• Spelling or formatting errors
• Urgency or high-pressure tactics
• Unusual requests for ID, payments, or crypto wallets
Identity Theft
Your data may be used to open bank accounts or apply for credit.
Reduce risk by:
• Avoiding unnecessary sharing of personal information
• Destroying physical documents before disposal
• Monitoring accounts and credit activity
Business Email Compromise (BEC)
Criminals intercept or mimic legitimate email threads to alter payment instructions.
Protect yourself by:
• Verifying any changes to payment details by phone
• Reviewing messages for inconsistencies or odd language
• Reporting suspicious messages immediately
